While an MBA is a degree course, and PGDM is a diploma course. In reality, we can say that an MBA degree program conducted by Universities and colleges PGDM stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Management; whereas MBA is a Masters in Business Administration. Both the course have different specializations

Nowadays, many students are making a career in their favorite field, some engineer is making a career in a doctor’s field, similarly, a course is also called PGDM. It is a Post Graduate Diploma Course in Management. The main reason for designating Post Graduation Diploma Courses as PGDM is that when an institution does not belong to an autonomous body i.e. a university and runs Management Courses, such organizations cannot award MBA degrees.

we can also say that As per the law in India, only the  University which offers degrees such as the MBA, BBA, B.Tech or B.E. Any educational institution which is not affiliated to a University cannot offer a degree. So institutes like IIMs, XLRI, NITIE, MDI, etc. which are the autonomous bodies and run independently,  cannot offer an MBA degree and hence offer the PGDM / PGP.
