Indian Institute of Science (IISc)


The Indian administration in Bengaluru established IISc in 1909. Built on 371 hectares of territory, it consists of 40 departments in six divisions offering different UG and PG courses, BSc, MTech and Promotion among others. IISc has an independent campus consisting of tourist agencies, a photo studio, bookshops, dry cleaners, a pharmacy, customers’ shops, bakeries, banks, children’s centre and restaurants.

IISc Admission:

Bangalore was founded in 1909 by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), to provide quality technical education for students. It is a recognised institution and has been certified as ‘A++’ by NAAC. The University offers BSc, MTech, MDes, Master of Management (MMgt) and PhD programmes. It has over 40 departments. IISc Bangalore was put in 1st spot by NIRF 2019 for the University.

Depending on the stream, the admission process for different IISc courses varies. The qualifying requirements must be fulfilled by applicants who can take IISc entry into either UG or PG courses.

UG Courses:

  • Acceptance of IISc BSc (Research) is JEE Mains qualification

PG courses:

  • Acceptance of IISc MTech is based on a clear GATE score
  • A valid GATE or CEED score is required for the MDes programme
  • The Common Approval Portal will provide admission offers for IISc MTech and MDes programmes (COAP)
  • A correct score in CAT or GMAT is required for entry to the IISc MMgt programme.

Admissions to PG courses are available online. International students can also seek MTech admission (Research).

IISc offers UG-level BSc (Research). This programme is subject to Class 12 as the basic qualifying requirements.

BSc (research) in six specialisations is offered by the Indian Institute of Science. For admission to IISc BSc (Research), the following exams are accepted:

JEE Main: entry to IISc BSc is dependent on JEE Main Ranking. Main admission. For the JEE Main 2020, applicants must be enrolled to ensure minimum 60% (GN), 54% (OBC-NCL) and 30% (SC/ST/PWD) for their submission.

JEE Advanced: candidates can also apply to JEE Advanced 2020 for admission to IISc BSc (Research). The minimum requirements are 60% (GN), 54% (OBC-NCL), and 30% (SC/ST/PWD)

NEET-UG: NEET UG 2020 with at least 60% (GN), 54% (OBC-NCL) and 30% (SC/ST/PWD) protected (GN)

KVPY: This test is split into three streams:

  • SA: Science students and Class 11 students.
  • SX: Science students and Class 12 students
  • SB: Candidates of Basic science and usually in the first year of their degree


Class 12 or PUC, with a 60% aggregate of physics, chemistry and mathematics (passing marks for reserved category candidates) or Class 12 is one of the subjects PCM, genetics, statistics, electronics or computing.

PG Admission:

IISc provides PG-level MTech, MDes and MMgt. BSc/BTech is the underlying qualifying requirement for both of these courses. 

The IISc MTech software is based on a clear GATE ranking, followed by the university’s personal interview (PI). The MTech programme earns a total of 609 seats.

BE/BTech or a University counterpart with a total of at least 50 per cent or Bachelor in physics, mathematics, arithmetic, geology, instruments, electronics or application of computer sciences.

MDes, MMgt Admission:

Two more courses at PG level are offered by the Indian Institute of Science. Acceptance of IISc MDes is calculated by a GATE or CEED score and the PI of the appropriate agency. CAT, GATE and GMAT are approved for MMgt. Candidates for GD and PI led by the University must also appear.

  • The GATE / CEED ranking for shortlisting of concept suitability checks and interviews
  • Candidates in the GATE/CEED, Concept aptitude test and PI results are the basis for the final selection of the MDes programme
  • COAP Registration for Candidates
  • Candidate success is dependent upon the final selection for IISc MMgt software in GD and PI.

Eligibility for MDes: 

  • Engineering/technology/design/architecture Bachelor’s degree 
  • Qualifying exam: GATE/CEED

Eligibility for MMgt:

  • BE/BTech or a known university counterpart with a limit of 60 per cent
  • Qualifying exam: CAT/GATE/GMAT

PPG Admission:

India Research Institute offers combined undergraduate and doctoral programmes. PI conducted by IISc provides the selection criterion for the two programmes. 

In four specialisations IISc offers an integrated doctorate. IIT JAM and JEST are exams approved for entrance to the IISc Integrated PhD. 

  • Centred on JAM 2020, applicants for PIs led by the University will be shortlisted 
  • Chemical science selection would be based on the PI performance of the nominee 
  • The preference is based on candidate results in the qualifying test and PI for biological, physical and mathematical sciences.

Biological Sciences: Physical, chemical or biological bachelor’s degree with at least 60 per cent of overall graduation or 60% aggregate of BE/BTech 

Chemical Sciences: BSc or Chemistry equivalent as one of the major 60% aggregated subjects 

Physical Sciences: BSc or Physics equivalent as one of the major 60 per cent aggregate subjects

Mathematical Sciences: BSc or mathematical counterpart, one of the major 60 per cent clustered subject or BE/BTech from a university accepted.

PhD Admission:

A correct GATE or NET JRF score is used in the entry of the IISc PhD. Candidates for the PI will be summarised based on the GATE or NET JRF scores. The final selection will be based on the PI performance of the applicant (the aptitude test/preliminary interview is prevalent for certain departments)

BE/ BTech or Master’s degree with an aggregate of at least 50 per cent.

Admission to the MTech (Research) Indigenous Institute of Science is based on the marks GATE or NET JRF scored, followed by PI.

The application form must be filed online and the required application fee must be charged to candidates seeking to take part at the Indian Institute of Research.

IISc Courses:

The mode of application for IISc Bangalore is online. The application form available on the official University website is required for applicants. Candidates must fill in.

  • Candidates are expected to appear for JEE Main and JEE Advanced/NEET to join BSc Research Programme.
  • Candidates have to have a clear GATE score for admission to MTech.
  • It is necessary to apply for GATE/CAT/GMAT to accept the Master of Management (MMgt).
  • MDes admission is based on an Aptitude Test and GATE/CEED admission
  • Candidates must be present for JAM/JEST to reach the PhD.

IISc Placements:

IISc Bangalore has a 100% placement track record. It has a dedicated positioning cell called OCCaP (Office of Career Counselling and Placement). Here are some main details on the 2019 placement of IISc Bangalore:

Rs 40 LPA recorded the largest package while Rs 10 LPA recorded an average package.

Hindustan Petroleum, EXIDE, Oracle, Samsung, Adobe and Intel were the most effective recruiters.

IISc Scholarships:

IISc gives its students different scholarships. The volume of scholarships varies, depending on the course, and from the date of the institution’s accession students are awarded bursaries.

Students from MMgt are not liable for a bursary. The MTech Initiative grants scholarships for 2 years.

  • CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICMR, AICTE, DAE (NBHM) and DST Scholarships 
  • MHRD Bonds / Stipends for GATE/JEST/JAM and ME/MTech/M Sc (Engg) eligible selected students
  • Scholarships from organisations such as GE, Infosys, IBM, HP, Tata, Philips, Bell Lab, Microsoft and IT Departments (DietY)

IISc Cut-off:

Candidates are given admissions to various UG & PG courses offered at the IISc Bangalore based on the cut-offs of the respective entrance tests or merit required for qualification. Cut-offs are released professionally by the college authority category-wise. 

The reservation criteria issued by the Government of India and the state are also kept in mind. Other factors include :

  • The total number of applicants applying
  • The total seats available
  • The previous year’s cutoffs.

The candidates that meet the criteria are only preferred for admissions. Admissions for most of the programs are done based on merit and accepted entrance examinations.
